This piece was part of a larger series of Japanese Yokai Illustrations, to form a book. The tales of ancient Japanese folklore are very interesting and captivating to myself.
The Bake-jukira is a mythical Yokai from Western Japan. It is described as being a skeleton Whale that is accompanied by unknown fish and strange birds. It takes revenge on those who hunt whales or eat their meat, and does so by cursing them with plagues and fire.
